A Time, a Place, Our Gaze: Re-framing the Subaltern Exhibition Opening

A Time, a Place, Our Gaze: Re-framing the Subaltern is an exhibition that features early-twentieth-century vernacular photographs of black New Brunswickers. These rare images include loving family congregations, intimate gatherings, playful moments, weddings, happy families, elegant black individuals, couples, and groups poised and shining, and precious black children enjoying moments of play. Curated by Kenneth Scott from his personal collection, this groundbreaking exhibition was first put on display at the Saint John Arts Centre in New Brunswick in 2024. Now reinstalled by Slavery North in Massachusetts, the exhibition and accompanying catalogue allows a foreign (non-Canadian) audience to contemplate the often overlooked, but profound, centuries-long black presence in the Maritime province of New Brunswick.
