A Time, a Place, Our Gaze: Re-framing the Subaltern

Books

A Time, a Place, Our Gaze: Re-framing the Subaltern is the exhibition catalogue that accompanies the photography exhibition of the same name. The exhibition was curated by Kenneth Scott and features early-twentieth-century vernacular photographs of black New Brunswickers. The exhibition was first put on display at the Saint John Arts Centre in New Brunswick in 2024. Reinstalled by Slavery North in 2026 at 50 Arrow Gallery in Easthampton, Massachusetts, this catalogue provides vital historical and cultural context about the relevance of photography for black individuals and communities in the Black Diaspora and the centuries-long presence of black populations in New Brunswick, Canada.
