Launched in December 2022, Black Maple Magazine is a one-of-a-kind fusion of academic and pop culture content and one of Canada’s first and only national black magazines. Born in Toronto to Jamaican parents, founder and editor-in-chief Charmaine A. Nelson created Black Maple Magazine as an online platform to embrace, challenge, and celebrate the beautiful diversity of Black Canada. Nelson is Provost Professor of Art History in the History of Art & Architecture Department at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and is the founding Director of the Slavery North Initiative.
“Since joining the AIVA, I have thought to myself at the end of each season, ‘We couldn’t possibly top the quality of last season’s entries’ and I am thrilled to report that I am wrong every time”, said AIVA managing director Lauren Angeloni.”As you’ll see, the winners of the 19th Annual w3 Awards are simply brilliant. I’m honored that such a wildly inventive group of creators entrusted their work to the AIVA. I also would like to extend deep and sincere thanks to our jurors, who gave so much time and care in their evaluation of each entry”
“At Black Maple we are elated to add five trophies from the 19th Annual w3 Awards to our growing list of accolades,” said Charmaine A. Nelson, Black Maple Magazine founder and editor-in-chief. “The success of Black Maple Magazine speaks volumes about our collaboration with the brilliant team at NVision and demonstrates the power of creating original and thought-provoking content for an audience that has been too long neglected.” Nelson also noted that, “International recognition of our vital contributions to the media landscape has thus far outpaced Canadian acknowledgement and publicity.”
