Award-Winning Professor Keeps Winning Awards
Amherst, MA — November 25, 2024 – Black Maple Magazine announced today that it has been honoured with nine awards in the 20th Annual Davey Awards presented by the Academy of Interactive and Visual Arts (AIVA). This announcement comes on the heels of another recent honour for Black Maple Magazine founder and editor-in-chief Charmaine A. Nelson, who was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the Universities Art Association of Canada on October 24, 2024.
“Dr. Nelson’s winning a Lifetime Achievement Award is of course completely deserved when we consider just this phenomenally productive track record,” said Dr. Erin Morton, Dean of Arts at St. Francis Xavier University, “What makes Dr. Nelson stand out is her fearlessness and the strength of her conviction to always doing what is right and encouraging everyone around her to do the same by holding our governments and institutions to account for the ways in which racist colonial histories show up in the everyday lives of students and colleagues in the present. Dr. Nelson is a world-renowned scholar, but this does not stop her from being a public intellectual for justice. In fact, her award-winning scholarship informs her activism.”
The Davey Awards honour the best work from boutique creative agencies, in-house brand teams, small production companies, and independent creators across Websites, Design & Print, Video, Advertising & Marketing, Mobile Apps & Sites, Social Media, Branded Entertainment, Emerging Tech and Podcasts.
Black Maple Magazine received gold and silver awards in the following categories: General-Arts, Gold; Features-Best Visual Appeal – Aesthetic, Gold; General-Health & Health Services, Gold; General-Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, Silver; General-Community, Silver; General-Magazine, Silver; General-Social Good, Silver; General-Education, Silver; and General-Blog, Silver.
“This year, celebrating two decades of extraordinary talent from small shops was truly special,” said AIVA Managing Director Lauren Angeloni. “The work showcased in our gallery speaks volumes about the dedication and creativity of our entrants, especially in this milestone year. I was thrilled to see so many new names joining our community, reaffirming that the recognition of smaller agencies and creators remains more important than ever. Congratulations to all of our honorees, and a heartfelt thank you to our jurors for their unwavering enthusiasm and commitment to this process.”
“I am humbled by the recognition from UAAC of which I’ve been a member since my graduate days. I am also overjoyed to see Black Maple continue to receive honours on the international stage” said Charmaine A. Nelson, Black Maple Magazine founder and editor-in-chief. “It affirms that Black Maple Magazine is unique, needed, and hitting home with our audience of Black Canadians, Black people in Diaspora, and those who love, appreciate, and support us.”
