How unlikable do you have to be to cause a group of 170,000 typically mild-mannered Canadians to want you gone? Well, you have to behave like the US ambassador to Canada, Peter Hoekstra. What has Hoekstra been up to? Since being appointed as the USA’s top diplomat in Canada in April 2025, Hoekstra wasted no time alienating Canadians across the nation.

The iratest and grossly disappointed amongst them have signed a petition to the House of Commons requesting that the government declare Ambassador Hoekstra persona non grata.

Amongst the list of claims of Hoekstra’s detestable behaviour, he stands accused of characterizing the 2025 Canadian election as anti-American, normalizing the president’s disrespectful “51st state” rhetoric, and claiming no knowledge of Alberta separatists meeting with US State Department officials.
